Why bone density testing is harder to reach in Nova Scotia
A publicly funded bone density scan in Nova Scotia starts the same way it does everywhere else in the country. You need a requisition from a family doctor or nurse practitioner before the appointment can be booked.
That is where a large number of Nova Scotians come to a stop. As of the provincial update published in August 2026, five per cent of the population was still listed on the Need a Family Practice Registry, waiting to be matched with a primary care provider. Nova Scotia Health is also clear that it cannot tell anyone their position on that list or when a match will come, because practices take patients from the registry according to their own capacity.

Who books a private scan in Halifax
Our Halifax patients usually fall into one of these groups:
